PREGNANT EARTH
Joan Baixas / Spain
“Pregnant Earth” (“Terra Prenyada”), a stage performance based on painting has a great visual impact, as the author uses his whole body to paint with all the resources of water and light to achieve a fluctuating image with multiple evocations, from a cinema screen to a cave wall. The material used to paint with is the ash from the books in the library burned in Sarajevo. The poet Joan Baixas theatricalises the act of painting. He avoids narration to tackle a new form of dramaturgy based on a pictorial language: splashes, scrawls, light and dark, line and erasure, abstract, symbolic, figurative and geometrical images are the characters in his choreographed drama.
The painter, dramatist and director JOAN BAIXAS was born in Barcelona in 1946. In 1967 he founded the group La Claca, the Department of Puppet Theatre of the Institut de Teatre, and the Barcelona International Festival. With the Theatre de La Claca, he wrote directed, and performed fifteen shows produced in collaboration with many acclaimed painters including Joan Mirò, and traveled all over the world. He closed the Theatre de la Claca in 1988 to devote himself to his own work and research. In his career, he has worked with numerous other theater and dance companies and has participated in many cinema, television, and fashion events. Since 1989: he has taught at the Institute of Theatre in Barcelona, is Artistic Director of the Festival Internacional de Theatre de Titelles de Barcelona.
