HAMLETMACHINE
Compagnie Sans Soucis

Heiner Müller’s HAMLETMACHINE – a piece that has become a modern classic – is a nine-page version of Shakespeare’s original play. The fierce younger generation of the French theatre company Sans Soucis has created an emotionally powerful vision of the Stalinistic regime, proceeding from the trammelled sense of stress and anger radiating from the play.

Max Legoubé’s Hamletmachine is perfectly mysterious. The play where puppets, shadow, object and gesture theatre blend is full of melancholy delicately conveyed by backstage voices. Three silent actors blend into one hybrid creature and you cannot tell any more who manipulates whom, who controls the sounds, light, accessories and bodies.

The COMPANY SANS SOUCIS was set up in Caen with the collaboration of both Max Legoubé (director, comedian and puppeteer) and Alexandre Gauthier (comedian, puppeteer). This company mainly dedicates itself in the creation of puppet shows. Since its establishment, nine shows have been put on stage and four are currently on tour.

Sans Soucis is always on the lookout of different realms and puppet techniques. This is how the desire to create a show of contemporary puppets inspired by Heiner Muller’s play entitled Hamletmachine began. This ambitious project, both by its message and by the aesthetics it develops, marks a turning point for the company. For this first subsidized project, Max Legoubé has resorted to other artists whose realms are considerably asserted.
